Stage IV describes invasive breast cancer that has spread beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to other organs of the body, such as the lungs, distant lymph nodes, skin, bones, liver, or brain. You may hear the words advanced and metastatic used to describe stage IV breast cancer.
While treatable, metastatic breast cancer (MBC) cannot be cured. The fiveyear survival rate for stage 4 breast cancer is 22 percent; median survival is three years. Annually, the disease takes 40, 000 lives. As with primary breast cancer, treatment for stage 4 breast cancer, such as chemotherapy or radiation, can often be harsh and unforgiving.
